Play Doh

On 2:03 PM
Elise and I spent this morning with Tommy's 3rd grade class making salt relief maps of Tennessee. She sat and played with the "dough" mixture and thought she was so big! She was upset that she didn't make a map like the big kids, so I told her we would make play doh when got home. Her immediate response was, "Can we even make it PINK?" So pink play doh it is.
Now, I know there are recipes for mixtures that don't have to be cooked on the stove, but this is how my Memaw (Mae Reid Hyden, my dad's mom) always made it. She actually came and spent the weekend with us. It was such a joy to have her here. She and I spent Saturday afternoon making cake pops for her to take home and freeze. There are kids coming over her house to celebrate halloween in a couple of weeks and she needed something fun to serve while they were there. I will post those pics too.

This recipe is very easy and takes maybe 10 minutes total. The kids always love making it, then love playing with it even more. It makes about double what would be in a normal play doh container. We store it in zip topped bags, but anything air tight will work.

Stir together: 1 c. flour     1/2 c. salt        2 tsp. cream of tarter

Add:
1 c. water with food coloring           2 Tbsp veg oil
Stir constantly over medium heat 3 to 5 minutes, or until it becomes rubbery.

Elise is adding the water (with pink food coloring). Can you tell by her expression that she is satisfied with the color? She is so funny.

Stir, stir Elise...and don't forget to pose, too!

This is after 3 or so minutes on the stove. It pulls away from the sides and becomes play doh.

Here's a happy little girl with her own play doh. She loved that it was still warm. Funny thing is, I can remember that being excited about that very thing when I was little and Memaw would make it for me!

What a happy looking girl! And such fun she had. So really my comment has nothing to do with this post, I wanted to send you a link to some very cute looking knitting patterns for tree ornaments. http://www.patonsyarns.com/TRIMTHETREE/
They are free downloads and if I did knit, I would totally be trying these out . . .
