When we got home this evening, Tommy found an egg in the chicken coop! I can't describe his excitement. He came bouncing in the house, unable to control himself!
In Tommy's 2nd grade class, they incubated chicken eggs. 6 chicks came home with us. We housed them in the laundry room (in a huge rubbermaid tub) until they were old enough to be in the coop. Once they were moved outside, in the period of a couple of weeks, Titan, our Golden Retriever, ate 2 chickens, both hens. This left us with 4 chickens, 2 of which were roosters. Now, the whole point of getting chickens was for fresh eggs. Roosters were not going to help us with that!
So, Mrs. Gail (Tommy's teacher-for the second year in a row-God bless her!) had too many chickens, we got 4 more hens from her. Well, Titan decided to eat one of those, too. We are left with (at this moment, pending Titan getting hungry for/wanting to play with any more), 5 hens and 2 roosters. We were really beginning to wonder if they would lay eggs or if they were laying them while they were out of the coop free ranging. We have taken a couple of walks around the yard looking for eggs that may have been laid. (We were told that someone else had that happen to them.) All of our questions were put to rest this evening when we found the first egg! I sure hope there are more to come and I can mark eggs off my grocery list.
